I sat deep in the English saddle in the outdoor arena. The gorgeous bay mare moved beautifully under me. Kalypso was a big Hanoverian mare, about 17.1hh, with no markings. She was a top of the line jumper. My instructions were to exercise her on the flat for a bit then pop her over some jumps, ranging from 3'3-3'6. Western may be my forte, but I do ride English as well and have jumped up to 4'6 since I've been riding both disciplines for a long time.
Kalypso tossed her head and fought at the bit. I collected her and made her walk a few more steps before allowing to trot. Honestly? It was like floating on a cloud. Then, I squeezed my legs and had her canter around the large arena. Once she was warmed up, I set her on the course.
The first jump we approached with a swedish oxer that was 3'3. Kalypso popped over it easily, almost like she was stepping over it because it just wasn't high enough for her. The next jump was a 3'6 triple combination. She tried to rush the first jump but I did a half halt (ooc: I believe that's what you'd do? sorry I don't ride English and this is all things I've learned over the years from trusted friends and trainers) and she was able to clear the three fences. A 3'6 double oxer was next. Kalypso tried to wiggle to the left, almost getting out of the jump, but I kept my leg on her and she popped over the jump. Three down, three to go. The following jump was only 3'3 and a single fence with hot pink flowers in front of it. I felt Kalypso get tense and pick up speed, trying to run out of the jump. Again I held my leg on her and slowed her just a tad bit. She popped over the jump but I felt her hoof clip it and with a glance behind me I saw the standard wobble but not fall. Even though I wasn't competing at the moment I still wanted to do my best jumping. Thankfully, the last two jumps were easy 3'3 bush and 3'9 triple bar. Kalypso didn't spook or rush either and I patted her neck with pride. She had a good ride. "Good girl." I said, loosening the reins as we moved out to the wall at a walk.
